Sorry, green parking only!

We all know how contentious battles over a parking space can become in the UK, but across the Atlantic our distant neighbours in New York taking their parking slots ultra seriously. So now that one company has decided to give preferential treatment to hybrid cars, perhaps we can expect the air to be turned blue as well as green.

RexCorp is one of the largest real estate developers and property owners on Long Island and now it is reserving prime parking slots at its office buildings for hybrid cars. The move is part of a larger environmental initiative by the company dubbed ‘Think Green’, in which it aims to reduce the carbon footprint of its residents through conservation.

The spaces, which can be found closest to the entrance of the buildings, have been marked with green stripes and the words ‘hybrids only’. The areas have already been seized by drivers of vehicles including the Ford Escape, the Honda Civic and the Toyota Highlander.

In an interview with a news outlet, company owner Walt Smith commented that the spaces ‘send the right message’ and another company representative stated that it is a reminder to play a role in reducing dependency on foreign oil. However, the scheme has received mixed reviews among employees – presumably the ones without hybrid cars.

The question is – would you support a similar scheme if it were implemented by your employers here in the UK? Leave a comment with your thoughts.
