Peugeot shows off its green credentials at ExCeL.

July 3, 2008 Posted by: Faye Sunderland

Peugeot green cars will be on display at the forthcoming London ExCeL Motor Show (which runs between 22 July – 3 August), from the latest ‘cheap to tax’ (at just £35 per year) 107 KISS SE to the show debut of the 308 RCZ concept.  These low-emissions vehicles and many others are a central part of the Peugeot stand, packed with new, fascinating and special new models.

The newest car on show won’t actually be on UK roads until 2010. The 308 RCZ Concept,  will be making its UK show debut and has only recently been confirmed to enter production.  Its attractive appearance is a product of the design inspired by the 908 HDi FAP Le Mans Series race car, with its double-hump roofline for low-drag aerodynamics.  The lightweight carbon-fibre roof also saves weight and helps achieve low-emissions of just 160g/km CO2.

Other exciting exhibits on the Peugeot stand include the Peugeot 908 HDi FAP LMS (Le Mans Series) race car.  So far this year the 908 has won every race - at Barcelona, Monza and Spa.  After a race in Germany in August, the final is at Silverstone on 14th September.

The recently announced 207 CC ELLE Special Edition is displayed in two of the magazine-readers’ chosen favourite colours and colour interior specification.

A number of environmental displays promote the company’s ‘Blue Lion’ standards including an exhibition of the futuristic 308 Hybrid Simulator.

For those enthusiasts looking for something a little more ‘extreme’ they may be fascinated by a design interpretation of the 207 GTi THP 175.  This particular car features ‘scissor-opening’ doors and a special bespoke leather trimmed interior.

Peugeot also has a driving experience of its range of vehicles available outside the halls, plus for those too young to drive an electric ‘pedal car’ driving zone experience.  Finally visitors to the Motor Show can view the Peugeot stand early by going to www.peugeot.co.uk/motorshow for a virtual tour.

Like the Aygo and C1, the Peugeot 107 is one of Britain’s more environmentally friendly cars - with fuel economy and CO2 emissions to rival hybrids. The 1.0 liter will be Congestion Charge exempt under the new rules and if you don’t need any more space then you can’t buy greener. The 107 is pitched slightly further up market than its pretty-much identical sister car, the Citroen C1, meaning better standard equipment and slightly higher prices. Spec-for-spec it is pretty much on a par with its other sibling, the Toyota Aygo. And, like its triplet sisters, it’s a likeable little car, combining dinky dimensions with reasonable performance and ultra-low running costs. The styling is slightly less successful than that of the Aygo, the 107 wearing its corporate-look front end a bit too heavily.
The HDI 90 three-door version emits 120g/km CO2, which makes it London congestion charge exempt under the new 2008 regulations. Impressively, the highest emissions Peugeot 308 is the 150bhp 1.6 turbo with a far-from-dire 167g/km. The 308 is Peugeot’s latest offering to the family hatchback segment, a rival for the Ford Focus, Vauxhall Astra and Volkswagen Golf and - according to Peugeot - a higher quality product than the 307 which went before it. It shares much of its predecessor’s styling, with similar sweeping headlights and a tall roofline allowing for greater cabin space. But the 308 is slightly wider, longer and heavier than before. It also gets a new range of engines including the 1.6 turbo motor from the Mini Cooper S and a totally redesigned interior with a much-needed makeover. Now the cabin benefits from typically elegant French styling with extensive soft-touch moldings, an inclined fascia and almost-retro dials and switches.
