From the Toyota Yaris to the Mazda2, from the Honda Civic to the Volkswagen Polo BlueMotion, it seems that every major car manufacturer has taken a shot at leading the green car race. Ford, with several ECOnetic models to boast of, has been a frontrunner too – but now it has a model that may allow it to set the pace.
The 2010 Ford Fiesta ECOnetic will lead the manufacturer’s recovery plan and will be a serious competitor in the sub-compact market as Ford strives to produce an ultra fuel-efficient vehicle of its own. The car will make its debut at the British International Motor Show later this month.
The vehicle has some impressive statistics. It is equipped with a miserly 89 hp, 1.6-litre TDCi turbo-diesel engine that can achieve an incredible 62.5mpg. According to reports, the car weighs some 50kg less than its standard model and friction is decreased further by a low viscosity gearbox that has been developed in association with BP.
The American market is clamoring for similar enhancements from Ford to be introduced on vehicles across the Atlantic. Euro-spec diesel engines do not meet US emission standards, but the use of low-resistance tyres, aerodynamic enhancements and lightweight materials could make a petrol-powered Fiesta more efficient.
If you want to be among the first to check out the new Ford Fiesta ECOnetic, head along to the British International Motor Show at the ExCeL London from July 23-August 03.
