Barbados joins green car campaign

If exhaust emissions and pollution have helped change our world from a picturesque planet of beauty to a smog-filled metropolis, then it’s fitting that we can rely on one of our few remaining places of paradise to be part of our efforts to go green.

has joined the ‘Make Cars Green’ initiative of the Federation Internationale de l’Automobile (FIA) Automobile, Mobility and Tourism Division. The campaign is being led by the Automobile Association (BAA), which is also working to reduce road accidents on the island.

According to the president of the BAA, John Sealy, Barbados can benefit significantly by joining this green campaign.

The campaign promotes ten tips for greener motoring. These include buying greener cars, such as hybrid vehicles and diesel cars with smaller engines. It also looks at the importance of planning journeys and reducing the number of short journeys taken; reducing loads and removing roof-racks; regularly checking tyre pressures; avoiding the use of air conditioning; more gentle acceleration; and offsetting CO2 emissions.

It is believed that by making these adjustments, motorists across Barbados can benefit not only the environment, but also themselves through reduced fuel costs.

So why can’t I buy a hybrid car in Barbados, a Ford Escape, A Toyota Prius etc. The dealers won’t let me buy.

Thanks for your comments…

Stephen it’s my understanding that a car running on natural gas is being trialled in Barbados at the Courtesy Garage. It’s said to be part of a trial to see how well alternative fuel vehicles would fare in Barbados.

I’m not sure about the availability of hybrid cars on your island. That being said it does seem odd for Barbados to promote the makecarsgreen campaign if green cars aren’t actually available there. Perhaps another reader from Barbados can let us know if they’ve been able to buy a green car.
