London Mayor, Boris Johnson has taken the decision to scrap plans to charge £25 a day congestion charge for the most polluting vehicles.
Ken Livingstone, the former major of London had planned to raise the daily price of the congestion charge from £8 to £25 from October for vehicles which emit 225g/km of CO2 or more. Porsche were in the process of mounting a legal challenge against the former major’s plans ahead of Boris’ election. Boris promised to scrap the plans as part of his election campaign.
Unfortunately for environmentalists, Boris has also scraped the exemption to the congestion charge for vehicles emitting 120g/km CO2 or less. However exemption is still in place for vehicles of alternative fuels although ther have been rumours of plans to scrap free parking for electric vehicles.
Mr Livingstone told the BBC that the move was a “further blow” to fighting climate change.
