PM opens British Motor Show

After months of anticipation the British International Motor Show is now open. The event, which is open to the public from today (July 23) actually got started 24hrs early as Prime Minister Gordon Brown spoke on Press Day.

The PM took the opportunity to highlight the importance of green cars. He stated that with oil prices continuing to rise, there were ‘huge opportunities’ for a green revolution.

To further his stance he announced a raft of measures to encourage drivers to use electric and low carbon cars. He said that the Government is working towards a situation where electric cars can be charged in thousands of streets and announced plans to spend £90m in the next five years in an effort to reduce carbon emissions from vehicles.

Mr Brown also met with motor industry and energy chiefs and discussed a possible timescale for the further introduction of electric and low carbon vehicles. He described this era as a ‘historic turning point’ for motoring.

“The rising cost of oil forces all of us to consider how to reduce our dependence on oil,” he said.

“It’s in a sense a once in a generation opportunity to transform our country to a clean energy future.”
