It may be home to some of the most picturesque scenery in Great Britain, but there’s a long way to go before the Principality embraces green cars.
According to the Energy Saving Trust, car buyers are making poor choices both for the environment and for their wallet when it comes to buying new cars. Even though there are many incentives for going green, the pressure is being placed on Welsh car manufacturers and dealers to do more to publicise the CO2 emissions of the vehicles they sell.
Research commissioned by the Trust found that 76 per cent of Welsh drivers do not know how much carbon dioxide their vehicles emit. However, when it comes to buying a new car, nine out of ten (90 per cent) drivers want environmental features to be brought to their attention.
Of the drivers surveyed, more than half planned to change their car within the next year. It is estimated that if each driver chose a green car they could save around £375 a year and collectively the UK could save around £1bn.
Clearly there is a willingness to learn among Welsh drivers with 55 per cent saying they would drive more efficiently if they had information on how it would save them money and reduce CO2 emissions.
