British built 2p-a-mile electric vehicles on the road this summer.

designers, Stevens Vehicles, have built an electric car which they claim costs 2p a mile to run.

The is spacious although compact with plenty of headroom and space for five adults. Its top speed is 56mph and a top range of 56 miles. It utilises reliable, traditional lead acid battery technology which is upgradeable to make use of future more advanced technologies.

Recharging is simple, it plugs into the mains lead into a normal 3 pin plug.

Costing £15,000, Stevens Vehicles have begun to take orders on the Zecar and its sister, the Zevan. The Zevan has a payload 450kg, measuring 3m in length and 1.7 metres tall; it cost £11, 995.

The Port Talbot based manufacturers claim that the low cost of running their vehicles could save you £7,000 a year, effectively paying back the cost of the purchase within two years.

Free of road tax, congestion charging, 100% corporation tax write-off and in some places, free parking. Not to mention running 50 miles on less than a £1 of electricity.
