Production begins on new Fiesta

August 18, 2008 Posted by: Paul Lucas

Staff, at the Cologne Stamping and Assembly plant in Cologne, Germany, has begun work on the production of the all-new Ford Fiesta - which is being seen as the first in a portfolio of global small cars.

The new Fiesta range will be one of Ford’s greenest offerings yet. Choices will include a four 16-valve Duratec gasoline and two Duratorq TDCi diesel engines, which will have carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions of just 132g/km - that’s a 1.3 per cent improvement compared to the previous Fiesta.

Ford hopes to build around one million vehicles within five years using the new global B-car platform and two million vehicles with the C-car unit.

The Cologne plant is actually just the first of many that will feature Fiesta production. Later this year work will begin for the Asian markets in Nanjing, China and Rayong, Thailand. There will also be further European models created at the Valencia Assembly Plant in Spain beginning in January, 2009.

The car will be launched in North America with two models - a sporty European hatchback and a popular two-door saloon. These models will be produced at the company’s Cuautitlan Assembly Plant in Mexico, beginning in 2010.

It is expected that Ford will produce 148,000 new Fiestas this year in Cologne alone.
