Every petrol pump in Great Britain will be prepay by 2011 to combat rising fuel thefts, say the Petrol Retailers Association (PRA).
Drivers will have to insert a debit or credit card at the pump before filling up, meaning that the amount spent is automatically deducted from the card.
Rising thefts have correlated to the rising cost of fuel.
Ray Holloway of the PRA told the Daily Mail: “The industry’s fuel theft bill has risen by several million pounds a year.
“One forecourt owner told us he was losing around £1,400 a month.”
