Starting today the European project BioDME aims to involve fuel producers, distributors as well as the automotive industry to co-operate on developing and potentially introducing BioDME (DME stands for Dimethylether) as an alternative fuel source for the automotive industry.
The main benefit of running vehicles on biosourced DME is the very low emissions expelled from the exhaust, mainly due to soot-free engine combustion. Couple this with its renewable source and BioDME could provide a genuine alternative to the fossil fuels used today.
In all, seven companies are involved in demonstrating the viability of the fuel, including project co-ordinator the Volvo Group. The project will include construction of the world’s first plant for producing DME from biosource, filling stations, and heavy vehicles. The Swedish Energy Agency, project partners and European money is all being used to finance the project.
“Already one year ago, Volvo presented seven trucks that could all be operated carbon-dioxide neutral. The BioDME project is an example of what the next step could look like and illustrates the possibilities of producing renewable fuel on a major scale”, says Volvo Group CEO Leif Johansson.

All at TheGreenCarWebsite.co.uk will be following these developments with interest to see whether we can add BioDME to the growing list of available alternatives.
