Cars at centre of candidates tussle

You could be excused for thinking this year’s US Presidential campaign was actually an environmental debate, such has been the focus on green cars and the future of vehicle production in the USA.

The latest twist came when Barack Obama’s supporters branded John McCain as “out of touch” as it was revealed his family owns 13 cars – notably including several foreign models. According to reports his family fleet includes a Honda and a Volkswagen, which has led to criticism from the United Auto Workers union as McCain had previously stated he is proud to buy American cars.

Newsweek has also reported that McCain and his wife own 13 vehicles, which has infuriated environmentalists who want to see a serious commitment from America towards tackling global warming and reducing vehicle emissions.

By contrast, Senator Obama has just one vehicle that he shares with his wife Michelle – a Ford Escape hybrid, which has been dubbed a ‘green machine’ and symbolic of what future vehicles should be like in the USA.

Of course, Obama is not completely above criticism from environmentalists as he, or at least his campaign, also owns a Boeing 757 – hardly the greenest campaign tool in the world!

Do you think it’s important that Presidential candidates set an example by driving green vehicles? Let us know your thoughts.
