Plans to build a road in Dorset known as the ‘Weymouth Relief Road’ have been condemned by pressure group, Campaign for Better Transport.
Despite the plans having previously been dismissed, following objections from local protestors, the government has given final approval to build the road.
A local campaign led by Guy Dickinson is working to try and stop the build of the road which would cause huge damage to an ‘Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty’, a ‘Site of Special Scientific Interest’ and the Ridgeway which borders Bincombe Valley, Lorton Meadows Nature Reserve and ancient woodland known as the Two Mile Coppice.
The traffic on the road to be bypassed is not believed to be particularly congested and yet the damage the bypass itself would cause is shocking. Bypassthebypass.org says it is forecast to give rise to increased carbon dioxide emissions: 2,347 tonnes in the opening year alone, 48 per cent of Dorset County Council’s target reduction of 4,851 tonnes for ‘carbon emissions under its direct influence’, for the same year.
Fear not, there is something you can do to prevent the destruction of some of the country’s most beautiful countryside, register your objections here, at http://www.bypassthebypass.org/index.php/register/add or visit http://www.bettertransport.org.uk/local_campaigning/guy_dickinson for more information.
