President of the AA, Edmund King is leading a team of AA staff in this year’s entry of the MPG Marathon. The marathon runs from Bristol to Macclesfield and back, the winner being the team that can get the most miles per gallon throughout the journey.
The news comes as the AA issues advice to motorists that they could be losing as much as three miles per gallon of fuel, through inefficient driving techniques.
More alarmingly this collectively adds up to a total of £7.7bn of wasted fuel a year for Britain’s drivers.
Using eco-driving techniques such as switching off the air conditioning and not over-revving the engine can improve fuel efficiency by as much as 10 to 15 per cent. These driving techniques also increase driving safety and reduce wear on brakes and tyres.
Mr King completed the AA’s Eco-driver Training course before entering the MPG Marathon. He is driving a Fiat Multijet with ecodrive technology for the competition, which began yesterday and continues today.
“Motorists up and down the country have felt the pinch, so the MPG Marathon is a timely reminder of how a few simple techniques can cut as much as ten to fifteen per cent off the fuel bill” commented King ahead of the race.
