The University of Glamorgan has been shortlisted for a top prize thanks to the development of a hydrogen-fuelled bus.
Glamorgan student, Jonathan Williams and supervising Professor Guoping Liu developed the 16 passenger bus to run on a hydrogen fuel cell which generates electricity and charges high-efficiency batteries to operate the vehicle. The bus also makes us of regenerative braking to maximise energy efficiency, achieving a top speed of 70 mph and a range of up to 250 miles.
The project has earned them a nomination for the “Outstanding Contribution to Innovation and Technology” at the forthcoming Times Higher Education Awards 2008.
The Times Higher Education Awards, now in their fourth year, aim to recognise the ground-breaking work undertaken by UK higher education institutions.
Winners will be announced at an awards ceremony in London on Thursday 23 October 2008.
