Zero emission transport takes step forward

October 10, 2008 Posted by: Paul Lucas

Zero emission transport has made huge strides in France as car manufacturer Renault and energy company EDF Energy signed an agreement to create a large-scale, zero emissions individual transport and travel system to begin life in France.

The partnership’s objective is to establish electric cars as a viable and attractive solution for customers as the Renault Nissan Alliance attempts to become the world’s leading manufacturer of zero emission vehicles. France will receive a number of its all-electric models, closely followed by Israel, Denmark, Portugal, Kanagawa Prefecture in Japan and the US state of Tennessee.

EDF, which has already established itself as the owner of the world’s largest fleet of electric vehicles, is bringing its experience to power storage and recharging infrastructures and is committed to expanding the availability of clean mobility solutions.

Speaking about the partnership, Pierre Gadonneix, chairman and CEO of EDF, said: “This technological and industrial partnership paves the way for innovation that will promote the emergence of new-generation vehicles that are clean, competitive and ecologically virtuous.

“The aim is to reconcile the challenges of individual mobility and economic growth with efforts to combat global warming.”

The agreement will see the Renault Nissan Alliance and EDF provide access to zero emission mobility from 2011. They will jointly develop a commercial project, open to other interested parties, eventually leading to the set up of an electric mobility operator which will supply customers with the infrastructure to recharge a vehicle and manage its range.

The partners will now study engineering requirements along with regulations and procedures to ensure the infrastructure is in place for a vehicle launch in 2011.
