84.09mpg Citroën Nemo – The UK’s most economical van

84.09mpg is the amazing fuel consumption returned by a Citroën Nemo 1.4HDi van in the independent ALD Automotive/Total Excellium MPG Marathon 2008 organised by Fleet World magazine. With this outstanding figure the Citroën Nemo takes over the mantle as the UK’s most fuel-efficient van from the Citroën C2 Enterprise, which has held the title since 2006. The 84.09mpg figure was achieved despite the van carrying half its gross payload, to simulate real-world usage scenarios.

Driven by John Kendall, editor of Van Fleet World magazine and co-driver Dr Paul Nieuwenhuis, director of the Centre of Automotive Research at Cardiff Business School, the Citroën Nemo beat all the other LCVs on the 411.57 mile event. John Kendall reports that, “The Nemo returned 84.09mpg over a very demanding route, which included virtually every type of UK road condition, ranging from Bristol’s heavy urban traffic, through fast motorway running, mountainous Welsh A roads and tortuous country B roads.”

Robert Handyside, Citroën UK’s commercial vehicle operations manager, comments, “The Nemo’s incredible 84.09mpg fuel economy figure highlights the outstanding efficiency of Citroën’s advanced HDi engines. Now with the accolade as the UK’s most fuel efficient van and the recognition provided by its newly-won International Van of the Year 2009 status, the Nemo is truly the van for today’s current tough economic conditions.”

Competitively priced from just £8,295 + VAT, the advanced, compact high-cube, Nemo van offers an unrivalled combination of low operating costs, high (610kg) payload and a practical and spacious 2.5cu.m load compartment. The Nemo also looks after its driver with a well equipped cabin, which provides high standards of safety and comfort.

The Citroen Nemo 610 SensoDrive 1.4 HDi and the Peugeot Bipper HDI 70 2-Tronic are the greenest versions of these vans and both offer an OFFICIAL combined unladed MPG of 64.2. However it is possible to get a better MPG than the official ratings as these are just a guide and many people may get less miles to the gallon depending on their driving style. Employing green driving techniques or hypermiling as these events demonstrate can get much more out of a tank than you would expect. There are driving experts out there who achieve some very impressive results but for most people, it is not possible all the time due to traffic conditions to get so much out of a tankful. I hope that helps.

If these vans are classed as economical and have reduced emmissions why is the road tax the same as more thirsty vans?
