Remember when Americans, driving around in their gas-guzzling SUVs, were thought to care less about the environment? Well now it seems that all things green are at the heart of all things red, white and blue.
Green cars and green jobs are seen as the future of the American economy during these turbulent times. An article in the Boston Globe, which drew from a variety of sources, claimed that anything from 2.5 million to five million new jobs could be created across the country in the green sector. It is also expected that the Government could pump in anything from $150 billion to $500 billion in new investments.
Green cars and green issues are also one of the focal points of the Presidential election with both Barack Obama and John McCain holding green jobs as a potential problem solver for the economy.
Since the 1970s California has led the way for energy efficiency on US soil with the creation of around 1.5 million jobs and increases in payrolls by $45 billion, while creating energy savings worth around $56 billion which has been put towards other consumer spending, according to the University of California at Berkeley.
Now it seems a fresh stimulus packages may offer a further boost as America attempts to plug the gap between it and both Asia and Europe in the race to embrace renewable energy sources.
