Seattle gets the green touch

Remember when motor shows were all about the latest super cars from Ferrari, Porsche and so on? Well not any more – now it’s all about which manufacturer can “out green” its rivals.

Yes, green cars are once again the theme of a motor show – this time the Auto Show, which kicked off yesterday at Qwest Field Event Centre in . According to reports, fuel-efficient cars will take up 25 per cent of the floor space – triple that of last year – and that is in spite of the fact that gas prices have slumped in recent weeks.

Unsurprisingly, the Toyota Prius, the green car of the stars, will take centre stage with its impressive 46.6mpg ratio. Also gaining attention will be established green hybrids such as the Nissan Altima and the Honda Civic Si.

However, one vehicle may blow all of the other green cars out of the water. The EMC3 has remarkable statistics – capable of achieving 60mpg and costing just $14,000-$15,000, the car is a throwback to German engineering of the 1930s which discovered that three-wheel vehicles are more aerodynamic than four-wheel cars and therefore produce better gas mileage.

Also appearing at the show will be the latest fuel-efficient models from the likes of Cadillac, Chevy, Ford, General Motors and Saturn.

The event runs until November 9 with admission set at $11 for adults, while children aged 12 and under are admitted free with a paid adult.
