Motoring shows throughout 2008 have been dominated by green cars and environmentally friendly innovations. However, there has been a distinct lack of fuel cell vehicles taking the spotlight, which is why the emergence of the Kia Borrego FCEV is so welcome.
One of the few fuel cell concepts to see the light of day, the Kia Borrego is effectively an upgraded version of the Kia Sportage FCEV which has done the rounds at various green car events over the last few years.
The Borrego doubles the range of the Sportage from 215 miles to 426 miles largely thanks to the use of three on-board hydrogen tanks. The fuel cell has also received an upgrade and has been combined with a number of supercapacitors to achieve a 47 per cent boost in power.
This also results in a boost in fuel efficiency, as the Kia Borrego achieves a incredible 100mpg – a 7mpg improvement on the Sportage. With a lack of competition in the market, Kia is hopeful that the Borrego may well catapult it into one of the frontrunner positions in the green car race.
The Kia Borrego is expected to be produced in a limited capacity in 2010.
