Insight into a greener future

Honda has set its sights high for hybrid car sales, targeting 500,000 globally each year. However, the target doesn’t look so far-fetched when you check out its latest addition – the new Insight family hybrid car, which is sure to be another green car hit.

The vehicle will feature a new Ecological Drive Assist System that combines three different functions to enhance fuel economy. One is ‘ECON mode’ which controls the engine, transmission and other powertrain components; another is a guidance function to help drivers become more fuel efficient behind the wheel; and the third is a scoring function with instant and long-term feedback.

John Kingston, Government Affairs and Environment Manager at Honda UK, believes that the system will help improve fuel economy in real world conditions.

“Hybrid technology delivers great fuel economy and low emissions, but these can both be affected by driving style,” he said. “This new package encourages greener, more efficient driving, in a fun and engaging way.”

The Insight is scheduled to hit showrooms in spring 2009 with Honda already announcing that the five-door family car will be significantly lower in price than any other hybrid on the market.
