With the Bologna Motor Show in full swing, Volkswagen have shown several new models, including:
The Golf BiFuel has been developed to run on both LPG and conventional petrol, with the German giants promising a 39.8 mpg and emissions of 149 g/km from the 1.6 litre 98 PS engine, and when running on purely LPG the emissions are reduced by 10%.
The manufacturers have performed extensive crash test and durability studies on the fuel tanks and LPG operation, and claim that the resulting Golf BiFuel will be safer than retro-fitted LPG conversions.
Also shown at the show was the Passat TSI EcoFuel, and getting its Italian début, which is the world’s first turbo direct-injection engine developed to operate using natural gas as well as petrol.
The VW Passat, which was shown at the Geneva Motor Show for the first time early in 2008, will accelerate from 0-62mph in 9.7 seconds, with a maximum speed of 130mph and emits a frugal 119g/k.
