Green cars take over Boston

Another motor show is being dominated by the latest green car concepts – this time it is the turn of the New England International Auto Show, held at the Boston Convention & Exhibition Centre, to be bitten by the environmental bug.

The 52nd annual version of the show has adopted a special theme, entitled “Fuel Solutions” in an attempt to show car shoppers that there are still affordable options available despite the slumbering economy.

Although the exhibition still includes plenty of “exotic” cars from the likes of Ferrari and big vehicles including the Dodge Ram and the Ford F-150, green cars are definitely the dominant force. Here are some of the vehicles to look out for:

  • - Chevrolet Equinox – A prototype sport utility vehicle that used a hydrogen fuel cell for power, producing water as exhaust.
  • - Ford F-150 – OK not your typical green car as it is capable of 320 horsepower, but it can also be run on eco-friendly flex fuel.
  • - Ford Fusion Hybrid – Expected to achieve 39mpg, the Ford Fusion Hybrid is an environmentally friendly version of the popular Fusion car and is expected to rival the Toyota Camry on its release in early 2009.
  • - Mercedes BlueTec – The Mercedes GL320, ML 320 and R320 are all sport utility vehicles but with a difference. They feature clean-diesel technology that eliminates the smelly exhaust of traditional diesels.
  • - Smart Fortwo – Already established in the UK, the Smart car is turning heads in the States with its three-cylinder engine and 41mpg economy figures.

As if going green wasn’t reason enough to check out the Boston show, there will also be a 1913 version of the Model T on display.
