Could Boston power electric car revolution?

Ever wondered where the centre of an American electric car revolution may be? Detroit? California? Well how about, Boston?

Boston Power is putting its Sonata line of lithium-ion batteries into Hewlett-Packard Enviro Series notebooks. The batteries, which are made with heavy metals, come with a three-year warranty, the longest in the market and it is the first time that a US battery company has sold a laptop computer battery to a top international provider.

This has prompted speculation that the company may soon announce a partnership with an electric car maker.

According to reports the company has already been experimenting with scooters and bikes and plans to expand its space outside Boston this year with sights set on powering trucks and cars.

However, what future remains for electric cars in the US remains to be seen after the US Senate quashed the $14billion bailout plan and with the likes of Tesla Motors being forced into recent job cuts.

So could Boston Power come up with a battery that makes electric cars competitive again? Only time will tell.
