Another glimpse at Detroit Auto Show

Yesterday in our article ‘what to expect at Detroit Auto Show‘ we told you how several car manufacturers had withdrawn from the event to save costs. However, among those that will be putting their vehicles on display there is a clear theme – green cars all the way.

So let’s take a more in-depth look at what you can expect from each manufacturer:

  • BYD Auto – The Chinese electric car manufacturer will be keen to turn heads at the show with its F3DM and F6DM plug-in hybrids showcased. Though they will only be sold in China for now, BYD is clearly looking to expand into the US.
  • Ford – The new Fusion hybrid has hit the headlines in the USA because it can achieve better mileage than the ultra-popular Toyota Camry hybrid. The new vehicle is further boosted by Ford turning to outside car design firms to boost the vehicle’s driving experience. Smart Design for example, has designed a dashboard screen that rewards drivers with green leaf icons whenever they boost their fuel economy by greener driving.
  • Honda – The new five-passenger Honda Insight is seen as a competitor to the Toyota Prius but will be more affordable. It is estimated that the vehicle will sell for around $19,000 – around $2,500 less the Prius – and with fuel economy set to be above 40mpg.
  • Mercedes-Benz – The German manufacturer will showcase three new concept cars including one that runs purely on electricity and another that runs on hydrogen.
  • Toyota – Considered by many to be the ultimate green car designer, Toyota will unveil the all-new Prius at the show. In an effort to create wider appeal the vehicle will have a larger engine that works in tandem with the electric motor to produce more power and yet fuel economy will still be better than the previous model at 48mpg. Toyota will also unveil the new Lexus HS250h, which will sell only as a hybrid and will push fuel economy to around 40mpg.

Which green cars are you most looking forward to from the list above? Leave a comment with your thoughts.

Tough to argue with you Shimon. BYD could well steal a march on the bigger name manufacturers.
