It’s not just the big boys producing green cars

Most of the attention at the Detroit Auto Show has gone to the latest concepts from Toyota, Honda, Ford and the rest – but let’s not overlook some of the offerings from lesser known companies which are proving every bit as innovative.

Near the top of the list would be the re3 concept from Johnson Controls. It is a plug-in hybrid electric vehicle designed to highlight the company’s capabilities in seating, electronics, hybrid power solutions and interiors in the small car sector.

The re3 concept boasts many exciting features such as an air-cooled, 96-cell, 22 Ah Li-ion battery pack with approximately 8.2kWh capacity and a discharge capacity of 50kW. The vehicle has electric range at 20 miles.

In order to maximise the space in the vehicle, the battery system is stored in a front floor console unit which maximises the distance to the perimeter. This also helps to maximise rear cargo storage and enables three-passenger seating in the rear seat.

Johnson Controls wants to meet consumers’ needs for more fuel efficient and eco-friendly vehicles that do not compromise on features and functions. That is why the re3 boasts a host of new elements including class-leading storage capacity; a seven-inch colour, touch panel display; a seat-wing armrest and controller on the driver’s seat; a conversational seating arrangement; and renewable materials with natural look finishes.

Indeed the re3 concept is a uniquely green car in that it provides significant mass reduction, makes the most of renewable materials and has an array of smart features to boost fuel efficiency.
