Norwegian company Miljo Innovasjon, part of the Tata Motors group, has reached an agreement with TM4, a subsidiary of Hydro-Quebec, for the company to provide electric motors, vehicle controllers and power electronics ahead of an electric car demonstration in Norway to run from 2009-2010.
TM4 will provide its latest generation of motors that use an inverted rotor topology for maximum torque density. Compared to rotor centric permanent magnetic motors, this system has a larger magnetic field and with the additional radius can provide higher torque and power density, which in turn leads to better efficiency.
Miljo will also take advantage of a permanent magnet brushless motor that has a high over-torque capacity. This allows greater power density output for high and continuous efficiency over a range of speeds.
This offers maximum power of 120kW with 170Nm peak torque. It weighs just 26kg and offers 96 per cent efficiency at normal speeds.
Tata Motors holds a controlling interest in Miljo Innovasjon, which produces electric versions of vehicles manufactured by the company. Under the 2009-2010 programme, it will produce more than 100 units of an all-electric version of the Indica Vista.
