The times are changing – in America at least. Once seen as the ultimate home for gas guzzling, environmentally unfriendly vehicles it seems the tide has turned with nearly half preferring an alternative fuel car going forward.
According to a national telephone survey released by Rasmussen Reports, 49 per cent said they would choose an alternative fuel vehicle if given the choice, even though 57 per cent admitted it was more likely to come from a foreign company.
This is despite the fact that there has been a significant investment in green car technology from several US auto manufacturers. For example, Chevrolet has been producing vehicles capable of running on E85 fuel for the last eight years and General Motors has even invested $61million in a research and development division. Its Chevrolet Volt is eagerly anticipated and seen as a green car that could potentially revolutionise the way Americans drive.
However, there have been significant developments overseas too particularly from the likes of Chinese manufacturer BYD Auto, Toyota, Tata Motors, Honda and more.
For now it seems that a large portion of Americans are willing to back environmental protection even though it may cause a conflict with economic growth if they buy a vehicle from an overseas producer.
