Car manufacturers may usually be rivals, but with the urgency for green cars gathering added momentum it seems they are willing to find common ground.
According to German car manufacturer BMW, the company held talks with French automaker PSA Peugeot Citroen last month – which sparked rumours that they may form an alliance. However, BMW has pointed out that the exchange did not cover co-operation on an industrial level and instead focused on issues including electric cars.
Co-operation on a political level over sustainable mobility between France and Germany was the order of the day, with the French government expected to unveil a plan to support the auto industry later this month.
Though no details were revealed about the electric car discussions, BMW spokesman Mark Hessinger informed the AFP that the company is also in talks with Italian manufacturer Fiat about possible joint projects. Peugeot and BMW have already co-operated on the 1.4 and 1.6 litre engines used in the Peugeot 207, 308, Citroen C4 and Citroen C4 Picasso.
