Higher performance and lower fuel consumption – that’s the achievement of Volvo’s entirely new five-cylinder, 2.4 litre turbo diesels: the high-performance D5 and the single-turbo 2.4D.
The twin turbochargers are different sizes and deliver a boost in pressure of 1.8bar. The smaller turbocharger is used at lower revs as it reacts with the larger turbocharger and provides an immediate response to quick throttle movements. Meanwhile, the larger turbocharger comes into effect when accelerating at higher speeds to provide increased propulsion.
The D5′s twin-turbo technology has made it possible to introduce higher levels of exhaust gas recirculation helping to deliver lower fuel consumption.
Fuel consumption and carbon dioxide emission figures for the D5 are:
- 6.2 L/100km (38mpg); 164g/km in the S80
- 6.4 L/100km (37mpg); 169g/km in the V70
- 7.0 L/100km (34mpg); 185g/km in the XC60 (preliminary)
- 7.0 L/100km (34mpg); 185g/km in the XC70 (preliminary)
Meanwhile, the 2.4D has been optimised for lower fuel consumption. Its figures are:
- 5.8 L/100km (41mpg); 154g/km in the S80 (preliminary)
- 5.9 L/100km (40mpg); 157g/km in the V70 (preliminary)
- 6.0 L/100km (39mpg); 159g/km in the XC60
- 6.0 L/100km (39mpg); 159g/km in the XC70
The D5 engine has already been introduced into the Volvo S80 and both engines will be made available in the Volvo S80, V70, XC60 and XC70 from spring 2009.
