One of the most well-established names in the scooter world – Piaggio – will be bringing a new hybrid version of its MP3 three-wheeler to dealerships later this year.
The vehicle will debut in Italy and Spain after the company was boosted by low-interest loans from the European Investment Bank late last year. It is reportedly capable of about 12 miles using nothing but electricity and also has a 125cc gas-powered engine that can kick in and provide extended range for longer journeys.
Much like with hybrid cars, much of the energy that propels the electric motor comes from regenerative braking – meaning the energy that is lost when braking is effectively recycled and reused by the scooter.
The MP3 has impressive performance statistics. The electric motor can boost performance at low speeds and fuel mileage is expected to be in the region of 140mpg. The lithium-ion battery pack used by the MP3 Hybrid, will take around four hours to recharge.
The vehicle is expected to cost between €8,000 and €10,000.
