It is one of the most iconic names in motoring – and now Cadillac may be going electric.
General Motors has been displaying the Cadillac Converj as a luxury counterpoint to the Chevrolet Volt with the aim of showing that extended electric propulsion can be applied in a wide range of vehicle categories.
Indeed the Cadillac Converj certainly breaks the mould of the traditional electric car. It has a forward-leaning profile, large-scale rolling stock 21inch wheels at the front and 22inch wheels at the rear with an all-glass roof that includes solar panels to help power the internal accessories. It is aerodynamic and ultra efficient with design accessories including minimal grille openings, rear-view cameras instead of side mirrors and a full under-vehicle belly pan.
The Converj will utilise lithium-ion battery power with electric drive always powering the car. The pack can be fully charged by plugging into the grid for less than three hours. It also uses GM’s Voltec propulsion technology, which was previously known as E-Flex, and provides longer range driving.
At this point it is unknown whether the Converj will make it to production but GM says it has substance and would be a logical extension of its current design path.
