Smith Electric reveals electric truck plans

One of the most rapidly expanding businesses in the green car sector, US Corporation (SEV US Corp) has announced the launch of a new company in conjunction with the National Truck and Equipment Association’s Work Truck Show.

The firm, a Delaware corporation that has temporarily headquartered in Overland Park, Kansas, will assemble and market all-electric zero-emission commercial vehicles in North America and will initially focus on electric vehicles for depot-based delivery fleets.

According to reports, there has already been strong interest from fleet operators and this has led the company to build a scalable assembly operation and supply chain for the emerging market. Via its UK partner, the Group Plc, it is already working with Ford to electrify the Ford Transit Connect with production scheduled for 2010.

Its first zero-emission truck however, will be the Smith Newton, which is the world’s largest battery-electric powered truck with a range on one battery of more than 100 miles and a payload of up to 16,280lbs. It has a top speed of 50mph.
