Described as the world’s most advanced mainstream car, and almost certainly the world’s most famous green car, the new version of the Toyota Prius has finally been unveiled to the Press ahead of the Geneva Motor Show.
The vehicle boasts some impressive statistics from furthering Toyota’s commitment to the environment to improving its fuel efficiency.
It includes a next-generation Hybrid Synergy Drive system with several improvements to the already award-winning powertrain. In fact, 90 per cent of the hybrid drive components have been redesigned to create a lighter and more compact system.
The Prius has increased power despite its added commitment to the environment. Its power has been increased by 22 per cent to 134bhp while its fuel economy has been improved by 10 per cent to 72.4mpg. This has led to a carbon dioxide (CO2) emission reduction – down to just 89g/km.
Despite its low emission levels, Toyota is determined that the Prius is not seen as a niche model. It is keen to emphasise that while its emissions are below that of an A or B segment car, its on-road dynamics and performance make it a match for most D segment vehicles.
Toyota has outlined an initial target of around 80,000 sales in Europe in 2010; the vehicle will ultimately be sold in around 80 countries.
