Green cars to be tested in Birmingham

One of the most hotly anticipated green cars is the Nissan X-Trail hydrogen fuel cell vehicle – and now it will be coming to the UK.

According to reports, Nissan has chosen Birmingham as the location for tests of the X-Trail. It has extended the length of the trail period for the model and will take advantage of the city’s hydrogen filling station, states the Birmingham Post.

The facility, based at the University of Birmingham, was funded by regional development agency Advantage West Midlands through Birmingham Science City. It contributes to the area’s international recognition in the field of renewable energy research.

Norman Price, the chairman of Birmingham Science City and the Regional Enterprise Board, is enthused by the prospect of the company coming to the city stating that Nissan is a “world-class business”.

Testing of hydrogen fuel cell vehicles is vital for the development of cleaner cars and it is not the first time that Birmingham has played a key role in their progression. Earlier this year, the University of Birmingham demonstrated the benefits of hydrogen via a zero-emission musical performance by reggae artist Carlos Dadawah, which used purely renewable energy sources.

Good to see Birmingham doing their bit. It makes sense to have it there what with the hydrogen station. Whats your opinion on the car? Can you see a future in hydrogen cars ahead of electric ones for example? Do you think Birmingham will continue to be at forefront of development?
