England’s capital city continues to be one of the most forward-thinking in the world when it comes to green cars and now council staff in the borough of Richmond has joined the environmentally friendly push.
Richmond Council will be launching a pilot scheme to provide low emission pool cars for its workers to use when they are out and about beginning from tomorrow, March 23.
The cars are expected to run on biofuel – predominantly recycled cooking oil – which the borough chiefs are hoping will have the dual advantage of cutting costs as well as reducing carbon emissions.
According to Councillor David Trigg, it was part of the authority’s vision for a sustainable and integrated traffic plan. It is the second Smarter Travel scheme in London and should encourage residents to follow the council’s lead.
Under the scheme, one pool car will provide transport for as many as eight council officers helping to slash carbon emissions and traffic congestion. If the pilot scheme is successful, it will be rolled out with staff members no longer needing to use their own cars for work.
