It’s arguably the greenest form of motor racing around, and it was Audi and Corvette that left the Michelin Green X Challenge full of smiles this weekend.
The companies scored the prototype and GT race wins respectively while winning the first Michelin Green X Challenge awards at the Twelve Hours of Sebring, which is the opening event of the 2009 American Le Mans Series season.
The Audi R15 TDi was making its first appearance at the race using a clean low sulphur diesel engine that prevailed in a 12 hour battle against Peugeot to claim victory while using less energy than its diesel powered rivals. It was an exciting race with the cars from the two teams exchanging the lead on 23 occasions and records broken both for race distance and average speed.
Meanwhile, in the GT sector, the E85 fuelled Corvette C6.R produced a one-two finish in both the GT1 class of the Twelve Hours of Sebring and the GT category of the Michelin Green X Challenge.
Steve Wesoloski, GM Road Racing Group manager commented that the performance has showcased Chevrolet’s technical capabilities in what was the final appearance by Corvette Racing in the GT1 category.
Silvia Mammone, Michelin motorsports manager, was thrilled with the success of the event highlighting that the efforts from Audi and Corvette proved that the terms “fast” and “green” do not have to be mutually exclusive concepts.
