More information on hybrid sales slump

Yesterday we told you how hybrid sales continued their downward trend in the US. Today we have more information with a breakdown of those sales.

Overall, reported sales of hybrids dropped 45.5 per cent year-on-year to 21,735 even though it incorporated a full month’s sales for new vehicles such as the Insight, as well as the Ford Fusion and Mercury Milan Hybrids. Here is how each manufacturer faired:

Ford: The addition of the Fusion and Milan Hybrids gave Ford a neat boost with sales up 21 per cent compared to April 2008. Together the two cars sold 2,299 units. Meanwhile, the Ford Escape and Mariner hybrids saw sales drop by 40.5 per cent year-on-year – there were a combined 1,165 units sold.

General Motors: The company sold 1,534 units in April which consisted of: 523 two-mode SUVS (Tahoe, Yukon Escalade); 95 two-mode pick-ups (Silverado, Sierra); 547 Malibu hybrids; 338 Saturn VUE hybrids; 31 Saturn Aura hybrids.

Honda: The first full month of sales for the Insight gave Honda a boost to the number two slot behind Toyota. The Insight sold 2,096 units in April pushing combined Honda hybrid sales up 25 per cent year-on-year. Meanwhile, the Honda Civic Hybrid sold 3,361 units, down 22.3 per cent year-on-year.

Nissan: Just 222 units of the Altima hybrid were sold in the US in April – a drop of 72.3 per cent compared to the previous year.

Toyota: Its’ combined hybrid sales dropped by 62.8 per cent with year to date sales down 51 per cent. Toyota Prius sales dropped 61.5 per cent in April to 8,385 from 21,757 albeit this is in anticipation of the new 2010 Prius. Sales of the Camry Hybrid fell by 67.1 per cent to 2,198 units, while sales of the Highlander Hybrid dropped by 63.8 per cent to 933 units. Toyota’s luxury division Lexus was also hard hit. Sales of its RX400h Hybrid were down 59.7 per cent to 655 units; sales of the GS450h dropped 59.8 per cent to 33 units; and sales of the LS600h L slumped by 84.4 per cent to 19 units.
