Indianapolis based battery market EnerDel has secured a huge coup as it announced that is has signed a letter of intent to power the Fisker Karma.
The Karma, set to be the standard bearer for plug-in hybrid vehicles, is to be launched in June 2010. The company hopes to roll out around 15,000 units a year and market them through a network of 32 US retailers as well as in Europe.
The letter of intent is considered a “potential long-term battery supply agreement” according to a Press release with the final contract hinging on the results of reliability and performance tests.
Charles Gassenheimer, the chairman and chief executive of EnerDel’s parent company Ener1, stated that they are excited by the opportunity to establish a benchmark for high technology green cars.
It is hoped that the battery packs will play their part in the mass deployment of electric drive. EnerDel has now launched the production line for automotive grade lithium-ion batteries with a Fisker Karma on display during the event.
