Another engine concept to make EXPO debut

Earlier this week we told you about a “revolutionary engine to make its debut” at the upcoming Engine EXPO in Stuttgart. Now we have details of another exciting concept to be showcased at the event.

Ilmor Engineering will present a new cutaway version of the Ilmor five-stroke concept engine at the show. Ilmor, based in the UK, has traditionally focused on racing engines, but now as a member of the UK Low Carbon Vehicle Partnership its business is becoming increasingly diverse.

The five-stroke concept engine achieves a diesel-like expansion ratio on spark ignition with the high effective expansion improving fuel consumption.

It is a three cylinder, 700cc engine that delivers a power output comparable to a 1.8litre four-stroke engine with minimum fuel consumption of 226g/kWh, with less than 240g/kWh for more than 30 per cent of BMEP.

The engine enjoys better fuel consumption than the latest downsized turbocharged GDI engines and is optimal for a range extended electric vehicle application, according to the company.

The event takes place from June 16-18.
