VW puts emphasis on downsizing

As part of its efforts to go green, Volkswagen is placing a clear emphasis on downsizing as it proved with two new engines at the 30th Vienna Engine Symposium.

The manufacturer has introduced a 1.2litre TSI petrol engine and a 1.6litre TDI diesel, both of which will be available to order with the new Polo and Golf later this year. Both engines show how Volkswagen reduces carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions and fuel consumption.

The 1.2 TSI combines petrol direct injection with a turbocharger to produce strong performance levels and torque curve despite having a smaller displacement. The maximum torque is 175Nm at a low engine speed of 1,500rpm. The Polo TSI can accelerate from 0-100km/h in 9.7 seconds with a top speed of 118mph.

The engine will be applied in the fifth generation Polo and has fuel consumption of 43mpg and CO2 emission figures of 129g/km. When compared to the 1.6litre engine of the previous model its average fuel consumption has been lowered by 1.2litres which corresponds to a 30g/km CO2 emission reduction.

The 1.6litre TDI is an entry-level engine for the Polo and Golf that will be available in the 55kW (Polo only), 66kW and 77kW options. It meets the EU5 exhaust emission standard.

The 66kW variant, which is available in the BlueMotion package, offers fuel consumption at 65mpg with a CO2 value of 96g/km.
