Chrysler wants electric car funding

In-trouble car manufacturer Chrysler LLC has put forward three proposals as a request for $224million in funding under two US Department of Energy initiatives – the electric drive vehicle battery and component manufacturing initiative and the transportation electrification initiative. The total investment under the proposals is $448million.

The proposal will include vehicles such as the Dodge Ram 1500 plug-in hybrid electric vehicle, the Chrysler Town & Country PHEV and the Chrysler Town & Country electric vehicles.

Under the transportation electrification initiative, Chrysler’s $365million submission puts forward the intention to establish a nationwide demonstration fleet of more than 365 test fleet vehicles for use by partners and select customers.

Under the electric vehicle drive battery and component manufacturing initiative, Chrysler will use as much as $83million to build a new vehicle electrification technology and manufacturing centre in Michigan. This facility would be used to house development, testing and electric-drive component manufacturing.

Given fuel types as an option. Chrysler should design all of the cars and trucks so that the consumer can choose the model they like with the type of fuel system. They should make bi-fuel cars with can run on CNG and unleaded. Bi-fuel allow the consumer to switch when gas stations raise the price. Even better just get rid of car dealers and let people order what they want on-line for a lower price and have the car shipped directly to your house or allow for pickup from the factory.
