As news about the future of General Motors, now mockingly dubbed Government Motors, continues to break, it has been confirmed that it will build a small car after reaching an agreement with the United Auto Workers union.
The American car marker has agreed to save two production facilities that were initially set to disappear and one will be responsible for producing a small car for the American market.
According to Fritz Henderson, General Motors’ President and CEO, small cars represent one of the fastest growing segments in the USA and around the world. He believes the car will prove a winner with both current and future customers.
General Motors has also confirmed that the selected facility will roll off around 160,000 cars a year with the assembly lines hosting both small and compact vehicles.
Henderson also thanks UAW for agreeing to work with the company to ensure competitiveness. He states it will take a special effort to bring a domestically produced small car to market in a cost competitive and profitable way.
