Coda to bring electric vehicles to California

A new company formed under the stewardship of Miles Rubin, known as Coda Automotive, will introduce an affordable, full-performance all-electric sedan built by Hafei in China to the California market in 2010.

The car in question is the Coda, which features a 33.8kWh, 333V lithium iron phosphate pack with an eight year, 100,000 mile warranty. Its projected driving range is 90-120 miles and it has a top speed of 80mph. It accelerates from 0-60mph in 11 seconds and includes an on-board charger that can complete a full charge in less than six hours.

The Coda will be a four-door, five passenger car, that will be made available for around $45,000 – even less once a $7,500 Federal tax credit and additional state incentives are taken into account. The hope for Coda Automotive is to sell 2,700 units in 2010 with production capacity reaching 20,000 units in 2011.

It has an impressive pedigree too – the Coda team has worked with Porsche Engineering, Energy CS and Lishen on the development of the vehicle chassis and battery pack. Its internal team and contract partners oversee the manufacturing process to help ensure that Coda vehicles are built to Western safety specifications and market expectations.

In addition, the company has announced the establishment of a global joint venture with Lishen to design, manufacture and sell transportation and utility power storage battery systems. Coda will own around 40 per cent of the joint venture, with Lishen holding the other 60 per cent.
