Fuel economy tips from an unlikely source

Just like cigarette companies pay for advertisements telling children not to smoke, it seems odd when a company that sells petroleum puts out a Press release highlighting ways to reduce your gas mileage.

Yet that is the case with Exxon Mobile, which appears to be making a significant effort to enhance its green image. Here, for the record, are its tips:

- Pack light: Remove unnecessary baggage from a vehicle as for every 100lbs that a car carries, its is cut by one-two per cent. A loaded roof rack should also be avoided, as this can decrease by five per cent.

- Avoid idling: Idling along will give you a fuel economy rating of 0mpg so try and avoid congested roads and map out a back-up route beforehand. Switch your engine off if traffic has reached a standstill.

- Apply pressure: Keeping tyres inflated will improve mileage by as much as five per cent – not to mention the fact that correctly inflated tyres will save you money on replacements.

- Tune up: Get your vehicle examined before you hit the road. A car that is noticeably out of tune could be dragging fuel economy down by around four per cent.

- Stick to the speed limit: For every five mph you drive over 60mph, a car’s fuel economy can be cut by seven-eight per cent. So stick to the speed limit.
