Ford has furthered its commitment to electric vehicles by including demonstration models as part of the UK’s Low Carbon Vehicle fleet.
A fleet of zero emission prototype Ford Focus battery electric vehicles will be used by both the Scottish & Southern Energy (SSE) company and a number of evaluation drivers in Hillingdon, Middlesex.
The vehicles will be provided by Ford, SSE and Strathclyde University along with a charging infrastructure in early 2010. It is believed that Ford has specifically developed the prototype Focus electric vehicles to test the technology’s suitability for future applications in its European passenger car range.
The fleet has been created partly with public funding from the Government’s Technology Strategy Board and Mayor of London Boris Johnson is delighted with the efforts being made to reduce carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions in the country’s transport system.
“I am absolutely thrilled that Ford and Scottish and Southern Energy have won funding to deliver innovative electric vehicles onto the capital’s streets,” he said.
“I want to make London the electric vehicle capital of Europe and these trials will provide us with valuable information on what is needed to ensure they can become an everyday choice.”
