As he leaves Kingsbury, on the outer reaches of London Underground’s Jubilee Line, the driver of the test train presses a button to switch over to the line’s new signalling system. Moments later, an electronic indicator starts to tell him how fast to drive. It tells him to accelerate fast out of the stations and brings him smoothly to a halt at the next, on the short journey to the line’s outer terminus at Stanmore.
The train is testing out aspects of a new signalling system for the busy line, which links central London to Wembley, England’s national football stadium, Canary Wharf, the financial services centre, and the O2 concert venue in Greenwich. The test trains are meant to be detecting problems so the new service can go smoothly into service, improving capacity by 30 per cent, late this year.
