News in brief: Japan to post 40 electric vehicles

Everybody may know those bright red vans – but not everyone will hear them coming in Japan, where the country’s postal service is scheduled to deploy 40 electric vehicles during this fiscal year.

The first units are scheduled to come into operation later this month after the Japan Post Service Company signed five-year lease agreements for 20 units apiece of the Subaru Plug-in Stella and the Mitsubishi i-MiEV.

The electric vehicles will predominantly be in use through branches in Kanagawa Prefecture, where there is a recharging infrastructure in place.

According to reports, Japan Post Services is also in the process of testing custom-built electric vehicles for mail pick-up and is likely to test the plug-in version of the Toyota Prius later this year.

Wouldn’t it be smarter to convert those red vans into PEV’s rather than use sedan to deliver mail. The iMiev and the Stella are passenger cars not really suited for mail delivery. JP has about 22K red vans, with more convenient sliding doors and more cargo room. Imagine the green house gases saved by not having to crush those vehicle or manufacture new ones. Conversion is the key!
