Peugeot combines green with power

Who says you have to sacrifice performance to lower emissions? Not , as the car manufacturer launches the latest 407 Coupe with two new engines.

Retaining its distinctive looks, the 407 Coupe is subtly enhanced by a range of engine and transmission choices that ensure driver involvement is kept in line with environmental responsibilities.

The new V6 HDi particle emissions filter (PEF) 3.0litre engine has a six-speed sequential automatic gearbox and develops a maximum power output of 241bhp at 3,800rpm. The maximum torque available is 450Nm and the vehicle is the most powerful production car in Peugeot’s history.

However, its performance at 0-62mph in 7.7 seconds is matched by good fuel economy by comparison to its competitors. It has a combined cycle 39.2mpg with emissions at 189g/km of carbon dioxide (CO2), down from 225g/km previously.

Also available is the new 2.0 litre HDi PEF engine which produces 163bhp at 3,750rpm and also features a six-speed manual gearbox. Its maximum torque is 340Nm and this can be achieved consistently between 2,000 and 3,000rpm.

However, despite the fact that the new engine has 20 per cent more power than the previous 2.0litre HDi, it significantly boosts fuel economy to 52.3mpg in the combined cycle, while CO2 emissions sit at just 140g/km – a reduction of 8.5 per cent.

The vehicles will be priced as follows: the 407 Sport HDi 163 FAP six-speed manual is £22,990; while you will pay £27,490 for the Sport 3.0 V6 HDi 240 FAP six-speed automatic.
