For a long time many critics in the UK openly questioned the lack of effort being made by our counterparts stateside to get serious about environmental issues. However, in recent months it appears the US has stepped up its efforts significantly and this was emphasised as it signed the Statute of the International Renewable Energy Agency.
The organisation now boasts 136 countries having been initially founded on January 26 with 75 member nations. Its membership now includes most of Africa, the Middle East and Europe as well as countries such as Greenland, Australia, Japan, India and parts of South America. The agency is located in Abu Dhabi, the capital of the United Arab Emirates.
The idea behind the agency is to engage governments around the world to promote a rapid transition towards the widespread use of renewable energy on a global scale.
The US’s participation comes after consideration by the Obama administration and Congress.
